Solar batteries are an impressive upgrade for homeowners with solar power. They give you the ability to store the electricity you generate and use it when the sun goes down (or when the power lines go down). But the technology is a lot newer when compared to solar panels…
…So are they worth the investment in 2021?
That depends on why you’re interested in batteries in the first place. Our solar power Brisbane team takes you through the benefits of solar batteries to find out if they’re worth it in 2021.
Energy Independence (and Saving Money)
Most solar homes use the electricity they generate during the day and feed the excess power into the local power network. So they use solar and get discounts on energy used at night. But a solar home with a battery (or multiple batteries) installed is able to use almost every kWh of energy generated. This can mean an even larger reduction in energy costs.
Solar batteries also make off-grid living a whole lot brighter.
When you set up a feed-in tariff with your energy provider, you’ll get paid a rate for every kWh you export back to them. But that rate doesn’t always give you the most value for the Brisbane solar energy you produce. Installing a battery means you use your own energy – so you don’t have to sell it at a discounted rate.
On average, a solar battery can help save a regular household up to $640 every year.
The Costs Short- and Long-Term
Priced between $8k and $12k, solar batteries don’t come cheap. And the payback period could extend over 10 years – which is the average warranty length. (These numbers and timeframes will depend on the size and brand of your solar battery.) So while it’s likely it’ll pay for itself, it won’t do it as fast as your solar panels will.
Solar Battery Rebates
The cost of a solar battery doesn’t have to be a big bite out of your bank account….
In fact, Queenslanders have access to interest-free loans and handy financing options to help them install a battery sooner and pay later. Victorians, on the other hand, are a little luckier. Eligible homeowners in Vic can save up to $4k on a solar battery under the Solar Homes Program.
Victorians, get in quick. The value of the solar battery program will change on June 30, 2021.
Choosing a Solar Battery
When choosing the right solar battery for your home, there are a few things to look out for. Factors like power and capacity will refer to how much it can store and how fast it can send out that stored energy. There’ll also be terms like Depth of Discharge (DoD) – this refers to how much power needs to stay in the battery so it doesn’t deteriorate. You’ll also need to consider the size of your solar panels and your energy usage.
So, are solar batteries worth it in 2021? If you want to be energy independent, yes. If you’re a Victorian who’s eligible for the rebate, yes. If you’re a Queenslander focused on getting the highest savings possible, a solar battery might not be the right call this year – especially if you have a decent feed-in tariff set up. But as the price of solar batteries decreases over the next few years and the price of energy rises, the value of solar batteries will only increase.
